Inglewood Squash Club

Inglewood Squash Club has built an outstanding reputation for providing some of the best facilities in the district, which has garnered praise from members, tournament players, and visiting players from around the country. The club is volunteer-run, with members who take pride in maintaining and improving the club’s environment.

Over the past year, the club has seen membership grow from 108 in October to 125, with many of these members being Social/Leisure players. The club has also attracted a number of out-of-town members, who were drawn to the club’s friendly and active atmosphere. Activities offered to members include the Members Series, sponsored five-week Team Challenges, weekly doubles games, Ladies Nights, and Junior Club Nights, which include coaching and locally sponsored mini-tournaments.

In addition to serving its members, Inglewood Squash Club offers a range of events for non-members, such as the Farmers Tournament, two Triathlons that include squash, darts, and euchre, and several other sponsored events. The club also hosts a number of tournaments, including two B-Grade and below competitions, the Central Graded Champs, T.E.T Masters Games Squash, and a Junior Prince day.

The club ensures that all members feel engaged through frequent communications via newsletters, noticeboards, Facebook, emails, and text messages. This ensures that everyone is up to date with events and activities. Volunteers are a key part of the club’s success, whether they are working in the kitchen and bar or contributing to significant projects, such as the recent construction of a large upstairs deck with toilet facilities. This project was supported by a T.E.T grant and many hours of voluntary labor from members.

With updated facilities, a growing membership, and a strong volunteer base, Inglewood Squash Club has become a vibrant hub for the local community, contributing to the club’s financial health and its appeal for event hire. The club’s commitment to its members of all ages and abilities, along with its robust communication strategy, has created a welcoming and dynamic environment that fosters involvement and participation.

Turangi Squash Club

Turangi Squash Club has experienced remarkable growth and revitalization over the past year, continuing its exceptional transformation after being unaffiliated just two years ago. The club now boasts 40 members on the grading list, along with over 30 newer social members. Turangi’s innovative Business House competition has been a major driver of this growth, attracting significant local interest and positive feedback. The club’s junior program is also thriving, with more than 10 regular attendees and seven juniors joining the grading list.

This year, Turangi Squash Club hosted its first singles tournament in over 15 years (the Matariki Singles and Junior Prince) and achieved remarkable success in interclub competition, securing first and second place in the Ruapehu Around the Mountain event—its first interclub competition since 2006.

In terms of facilities, the club has made significant progress in its upgrades, addressing long-standing structural issues, such as sunken floors and a leaking roof. Volunteers have played a pivotal role in these improvements, which include new lighting for the courts and club/bar areas, updated floor coverings, and the replacement of ceilings and bathroom fixtures. These efforts have completely transformed the club from a dilapidated state into a modern, welcoming facility.
Turangi’s reputation as a welcoming and hospitable club continues to grow, supported by a strong culture of participation at tournaments across Central Districts, Waikato, and Bay of Plenty. The club’s commitment to creating an inviting and engaging atmosphere, coupled with its impressive growth and facility upgrades, makes it a deserving nominee for Club of the Year.

Whanganui Squash Club

Whanganui Squash Club has undergone significant growth and development over the past year, driven by successful initiatives to expand membership and engagement. Key efforts include the revitalization of the junior program, a growing Business House competition, and increased participation in Club Night. Membership has risen notably, with 84 new full memberships offsetting a reduction in casual memberships. The introduction of the “New to Squash” deal was highly effective, attracting 36 new players. Junior membership has also seen a surge, rising from 11 to 28, while female membership increased from 77 to 94, thanks to dedicated women’s sessions that promoted tournament participation.

The club has successfully cultivated sponsorships, bringing on 14 new sponsors and receiving support from numerous small businesses during the NZ Masters Club Teams Champs. These sponsorships have played a vital role in the success of the club’s events and operations.

In terms of operational improvements, Whanganui Squash Club has made significant strides. A new website launched during the awards period provides key support for members and visitors alike, and the club has established effective processes for sponsorship, venue hire, and feedback management. The club also renewed its bar license this year, thanks to the diligent efforts of the administrator, Jodie, who worked closely with the local council.

Whanganui Squash Club members have excelled in various competitions, with several juniors and seniors earning representative honors. Additionally, the club’s performance at the NZ Masters Club Team Champs, as well as the historic return to the Cousins Shield after 40 years, showcases the competitive strength of its players.

Hosting major events has been a key contribution from Whanganui Squash Club to the wider squash community. The club successfully organized the largest-ever NZ Masters Club Teams Champs and one of the strongest Central Opens in recent years. These events were supported by facility upgrades, such as a new ventilation system and enhancements to the deck area, improving the experience for both players and spectators.

In summary, Whanganui Squash Club’s growth, best practices, and outstanding performance make it a strong contender for Club of the Year.
