A spirited showdown between Central Squash and Waikato Squash took place on 6 April 2025 at Kawaroa Park Squash Club, with both regions battling it out for bragging rights and the prestigious Leevey Shield. Despite an early 6am start for most of the players, both teams were raring to go and ready on court by the scheduled 9:30am start.
From the first serve to the final point, the intensity was high, with the Central Seniors Team leaving it all on court. But the Waikato side proved too strong on the day, taking the Shield with an emphatic 19–5 victory. The Shield now makes its way back to Taumaranui Squash Club with a well-earned win under their belt.
The Leevey family, long-time supporters of the Challenge, sent a message in their absence:
“We are very pleased to be supporting this Challenge but unfortunately, we cannot be there to present the Shield this year. Hope you have enjoyed the games with some good results. Congratulations Waikato. Travel safely home and hopefully will see you next year.”
The event wouldn’t have been possible without the generosity and support of many. A big thank you to Kawaroa Park Squash Club for the use of their facilities, to Kaye Carter for her fantastic efforts in organising the day, and to the many supporters who came out to cheer on the teams. There was a great sense of camaraderie throughout the day, with players stepping up to coach and support one another—showcasing the true spirit of squash.
While Central may not have claimed the Shield this year, the connections, experience, and determination on display promise plenty of exciting rematches in the future.
