On 31 January 2026, 18 of Central’s top juniors travelled to Dannevirke Squash Club for the annual Central vs Eastern Challenge, hosted this year on Central soil. It marked an exciting start to the season, with several players making their debut in Central colours and proudly stepping up to represent the region for the first time.

From the opening matches it was clear the day would be tightly contested. There were some particularly tough match-ups in the Under 13 and Under 15 boys’ grades, with long rallies and determined performances setting the tone early. Every point was hard fought, and the scoreboard reflected just how close the contest was.

At the halfway mark, Eastern held a narrow 10–8 lead. With only two ties separating the teams, everything was still to play for heading into the afternoon session.

The second half delivered more high-quality squash. The opening round of afternoon matches kept the contest within reach, with Central continuing to apply pressure and refusing to let Eastern extend their advantage easily. However, as the day wore on, Eastern began to edge ahead in the later rounds, gradually building momentum and ultimately securing the title for the second consecutive year.

While the final result didn’t fall Central’s way, the effort and attitude of the team could not be faulted. The players battled hard across every grade, showed resilience in tough moments, and represented Central with pride. For many, it was a valuable experience early in the season and a benchmark to build from in the months ahead.

A special mention goes to Max, who not only took to the court as a player but also made his coaching debut. Throughout the day he supported the team courtside, offering advice, encouragement and steady leadership — an important contribution to the overall team environment.

Thank you to Dannevirke Squash Club for hosting and to all players, supporters and organisers who made the day such a success. It was a fantastic way to kick off the 2026 representative season, and Central will no doubt be motivated to come back stronger next year.
